Is a Maine Coon really bigger than a Ragdoll?

Barely, on paper. The CFA says mature males of both breeds often reach or exceed 20 pounds.
Weight ranges from the breed registry
The CFA calls the Maine Coon the largest pedigreed cat, yet its Maine Coon profile and Ragdoll profile describe male size almost identically.
📊 Tested / Sourced: A 2025 Royal Veterinary College study put UK Ragdolls’ median adult weight at about 11 lb for males and 8.4 lb for females. We found no Maine Coon equivalent.
Why a Ragdoll keeps growing longer
Per the CFA, Maine Coons take up to three years; Ragdolls reach full size at four.
🐾 Life-Stage Note: A one- or two-year-old of either breed isn’t finished growing.
Build: what actually looks different
Both are long and heavy-boned. The Maine Coon stands out with a shaggy coat and tufted ears, the Ragdoll with pointed coloring and blue eyes.
Lap cat or busy shadow? How their personalities differ
Both breeds are people-oriented; they differ in how much they ask of you.
Ragdoll: close by and easygoing
The CFA calls Ragdolls loving without being demanding. They stay near you, enjoy play without insisting, and mew softly.
Maine Coon: social but independent
The CFA calls Maine Coons sociable and fairly independent, yet insistent on interaction when you’re home. Here’s how much of the Maine Coon’s dog-like reputation holds up.
Kids, dogs and other cats
The CFA says both get along with children and other animals. A Maine Coon’s size can intimidate at first; a trusting Ragdoll needs careful introductions.
🐾 Life-Stage Note: An adult cat’s personality is already visible; a kitten’s isn’t.
Grooming, shedding and space in a real home
The coats differ more than the sizes.
Weekly brushing for each coat
The CFA suggests combing a Maine Coon two or three times weekly to control shedding and matting. Ragdolls need it once or twice; lacking a thick undercoat, they shed less.
⚠️ Watch Out: Less isn’t none. The 2025 RVC study found haircoat problems in 4% of Ragdolls versus 2.6% of UK cats.
Litter boxes, cat trees and floor space
The CFA says Ragdolls don’t need much living space. Either breed needs an oversized litter box; here’s how many litter boxes you need, and how big.
Maine Coon vs Ragdoll cost: kitten price to yearly care
Kitten price is your biggest controllable cost, and published figures disagree too widely to trust.
What US breeders are asking right now (our survey)
What drives the price up
The CFA says Ragdoll prices depend on markings and show-winning bloodlines. Ask whether vaccines, spay or neuter, registration and parents’ test results are included. For Maine Coons, see what a Maine Coon costs from a breeder or rescue.
Food, grooming and insurance
The CFA warns that food-loving Ragdolls risk obesity, so measure portions.
✅ Do This: Get insurance quotes for the exact breed and age.
Health and lifespan: the heart risk both breeds share
Each breed has its own inherited form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a thickened heart muscle.
Two breeds, two different HCM DNA tests
| Breed | Mutation | Two copies means (UC Davis) |
|---|---|---|
| Maine Coon | A31P | Severe disease; sudden death possible by about age 4 |
| Ragdoll | R820W | Severe signs, usually at 1–2 years |
Breeders need the breed-correct test, such as the Ragdoll HCM DNA test from UC Davis.
What a clear DNA result can’t promise
UC Davis says A31P isn’t the only cause of Maine Coon HCM, so a clear result doesn’t rule HCM out. See what a DNA test and a heart scan can each tell you.
🚨 Go to a Vet Now If: your cat breathes fast or open-mouthed, suddenly can’t use its back legs, or collapses. Go to an emergency clinic; these emergency signs apply to both breeds.
How long each breed really lives
The Royal Veterinary College’s life expectancy study put life expectancy at 9.71 years for Maine Coons and 10.31 for Ragdolls, with overlapping ranges. The RVC’s 2025 Ragdoll study found a median age at death of 12.85 years, a different measure.
